- AmaChol®: new scientific evidence on the potential of Amaranthus caudatus extract

26 October 2026

Scientific research continues to explore the potential of plant-based ingredients in the nutraceutical sector, with particular attention to their composition, biological mechanisms and potential applications in innovative formulations.

Within this context, **AmaChol®** is an extract derived from *Amaranthus caudatus L.* seeds, developed by **NatIng Italia** and distributed in Switzerland by **ECSA Chemicals – Pharma & Nutrition**.

On 12 January 2026, the scientific journal *Frontiers in Nutrition* published the study *“Preliminary evaluation of an extract of Amaranthus caudatus as a novel nutraceutical: effects on cholesterol and glucose absorption”*, focusing on the characterisation of the extract and the preliminary evaluation of its biological activities.

## AmaChol®: a botanical ingredient for nutraceutical research

AmaChol® is a dry extract obtained from *Amaranthus caudatus L.* seeds through an aqueous extraction process.

According to the manufacturer's technical data sheet, the ingredient has the following characteristics:

- **Botanical name:** *Amaranthus caudatus L.*
- **Plant part used:** seeds
- **Extraction solvent:** water
- **Drug-extract ratio (DER):** 4:1
- **Country of manufacture:** Italy
- **Excipients:** none
- **Characteristics:** gluten-free and suitable for vegan formulations

These characteristics make AmaChol® an ingredient of interest for the development of plant-based nutraceutical formulations.

## A new scientific publication

The study published in *Frontiers in Nutrition* investigated AmaChol® through an approach combining metabolomic analyses, in vitro testing and preliminary observations in humans.

Metabolomic characterisation enabled the annotation of numerous compounds belonging to different classes, including flavonoids, isoflavonoids, triterpenoids, fatty acids and phenolic compounds.

The researchers subsequently investigated several biological processes related to carbohydrate digestion, intestinal glucose and cholesterol transport, and antioxidant activity.

### Inhibition of digestive enzymes

In vitro tests demonstrated inhibitory activity against two enzymes involved in carbohydrate digestion:

- **α-amylase:** responsible for the breakdown of starch.
- **α-glucosidase:** involved in the release of glucose from carbohydrates.

These results help describe the extract's potential mechanisms of action at intestinal level, which require further confirmation through controlled clinical studies.

### Intestinal glucose and cholesterol transport

Using a three-dimensional model of human intestinal epithelium, the researchers observed reduced glucose transport in the presence of the extract compared with experimental controls.

A reduction in the absorption of a fluorescent cholesterol analogue was also observed in the same model.

**Scientific note:** these findings relate to experimental in vitro conditions and must not be interpreted as clinically demonstrated reductions in blood glucose or cholesterol levels in humans.

### Antioxidant activity

Laboratory tests also demonstrated antioxidant activity of the extract, evaluated using a colorimetric assay based on ABTS oxidation.

These observations contribute to a broader understanding of AmaChol®'s biological profile.

## Preliminary observations in humans

The publication also reports an observational study conducted over three months in individuals with impaired glycaemic control.

Of the 60 participants initially enrolled, data were available for 37 participants at the end of the observation period.

The results showed statistically significant changes in certain parameters, including glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), postprandial blood glucose and body mass index (BMI).

Mean reductions in total and LDL cholesterol were also observed, although these changes did not reach statistical significance.

**Study limitations:** the study was preliminary and did not include a parallel control group. Consequently, the observed changes cannot be attributed with certainty to consumption of the extract. Further randomised controlled clinical trials will be needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

## Research and innovation in nutraceutical ingredients

This publication provides a further contribution to the scientific characterisation of AmaChol® and to the exploration of botanical extracts for nutraceutical applications.

The combination of metabolomic characterisation, experimental testing and human observations provides a foundation for further research.

Through its collaboration with NatIng Italia, **ECSA Chemicals – Pharma & Nutrition** makes AmaChol® and its supporting technical and scientific documentation available to the Swiss market.
